Buena Vista Maintenance Supervisor

“To me, it means a lot to help other people. The reward is seeing a smile on someone’s face and knowing I helped them out.”
Greg Smith, Buena Vista Maintenance Supervisor
What is your name? Gregory Smith
Do you have a nickname that you go by? No
What is your position with VOAMI? Maintenance Supervisor at Buena Vista Senior Community
What brought you to VOAMI? I used to work in maintenance with Atonya Patterson at a previous job. She called me to see if I wanted to come work for her at Buena Vista because she knew I was a hard worker. At that job, I had led our properties through NSPIRE (National Standards for Physical Inspection of Real Estate) inspections for HUD housing and scored 99/100 in both 2022 and 2023. I was retired at the time, but I came out of retirement to join Buena Vista, and in 2026 we scored another 99/100 on our NSPIRE inspection.
How long have you worked with VOAMI? 1 year and 8 months
What sort of workday leaves you feeling energized? Getting the job done right, on time, and with everything done correctly.
What are you looking forward to most in the next year? Keeping Buena Vista maintained and keeping everything at 100%, both inside and out.
What does it mean to you to be helping others? To me, it means a lot to help other people. The reward is seeing a smile on someone’s face and knowing I helped them out.
What is the best piece of advice you would give someone else? Be patient, polite, and respectful, no matter what.
What fills your time outside of work? I started out at 17 years old as a journeyman bricklayer. My brother did the same work, and I wanted to keep it in the family. I worked for one of the biggest construction companies in Saginaw and even had a couple of newspaper articles written about me.
What’s something people don’t know about you? I’m a journeyman bricklayer by trade! (See pictures)
