On November 12, Gardner-White Furniture showed up in one of the biggest ways possible. Rewind to last year, when United States Army Veteran, Larry, found himself without a job, without a home, and no support system. After Larry returned home from serving in Operation Desert Storm, he struggled to acclimate in civilian life because he was unknowingly suffering from PTSD and self medicating with alcohol. His marriage had failed, he was laid off from his job, and he quickly found himself living in his car.
That’s when Larry found shelter and stability at our Detroit Veterans Housing Program. After moving in and receiving necessary services to help him back on his feet, Larry was able to find sobriety, a new job, and his very own apartment. However, there was still something missing. Although he had his own space and independence back, his apartment was empty.
When Gardner-White learned of Larry’s situation, they jumped on the opportunity to help one of our nation’s heroes. Now Larry can finally relax in his new home, able to focus on building his life back up rather than how he can afford a chair to sit on or a bed to sleep in.
