Fox 2: Army Veteran Carroll Simpson’s story from a shelter chair to a home of her own

How VOA Michigan is transforming lives - Army veteran Carroll Simpson's story on FOX 2 Detroit ▶ Watch: Carroll Simpson’s story (FOX 2 Detroit)

Carroll Simpson served in the Army. Decades later, after several strokes left her struggling to walk, she found herself in a shelter where the only place to sleep was a chair. She was 80 years old.

Volunteers of America Michigan connected Carroll with William White, who helped her find housing. Today she lives at Oak Village Square, our senior community on Detroit’s west side, in her own apartment.

FOX 2 Detroit’s Brandon Hudson asked Carroll how she felt when she learned she had a home. She answered with one word.

“Happy.”

Carroll’s experience reflects something our teams see regularly. Older veterans who served their country decades ago can find themselves without stable housing, and the path back is harder when health and mobility are working against them. It takes someone willing to sit down, listen, and stay with it until the door opens.

Carroll has that door now.
