Volunteers of America Michigan is working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to prevent Veteran suicide in Michigan.
We recently received $750,000 per year from VA to support its mission through the Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SERV), a three-year program that provides funding to community-based organizations with innovative ideas for preventing Veteran suicide.
“Veterans are our neighbors, and we are committed to ensuring they have the care they need in their community,” said Kristin Benton, Director of Development & Communications.
With its SSG Fox SPGP award, Volunteers of America Michigan plans to provide veterans in Michigan case management, referrals to services needed and connection to Peer Support Specialists. Peer support specialists are trained and certified Veterans who have gone through mental health challenges and now serve as a mentor/peer to other vets. Three full time staff members will be designated as peer support specialists. In addition, VOA will increase community awareness and training on veteran suicide.
