Behavioral Health Coordinator

“I work with homeless veterans, if I can make any of them feel ‘at home’ during an intake, a care coordination, or even just a conversation, I know I’ve done my job for that day.”
Morgan Caudill, Behavioral Health Coordinator
What is your name? Morgan Caudill
What is your position with VOAMI? Behavioral Health Coordinator in the Healthcare department
What brought you to VOAMI? I was looking for something in the non-profit world after graduating with a Social Work degree from Wayne State University. I truly had no idea what I even wanted to do with my degree yet, just wanted to help people. VOAMI opened its arms to me as a newbie/fresh graduate and I am forever grateful! I get the opportunity to help someone new every day.
How long have you worked with VOAMI? 5 years total (3 years with HPOG, one year gone, 2 years at DVHP)
What is your biggest takeaway from your job? I have been lucky enough to surround myself with other employees who are passionate, caring, hard-working, and so supportive. This has shown me that I need to find these types of people in all walks of life, professionally and personally. I wouldn’t be anywhere near as happy and loved as I am today without that. Community is everything!!
What does it mean to you to be helping others? It means simply changing someone’s negative perspective into a positive experience. I work with homeless veterans, if I can make any of them feel “at home” during an intake, a care coordination, or even just a conversation, I know I’ve done my job for that day.
What is your biggest challenge? Learning a new perspective from various types of people is a challenge but also a gift. I’m not a veteran, nor do I come from a family of veterans, so learning from my clients is an everyday thing.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Meet people where they are at! You never know what someone is feeling/going through internally, even if you have been in a similar situation before. Showing up for someone in the way that that specific person needs/wants, and accepting where they are in that moment emotionally, can be everything to someone.
What is your favorite color? Green! So many fun shades of green. Everything from lime green to forest green.
Where is your ideal vacation spot? I’d love to go to Europe! I don’t really care where in Europe honestly, but I’ve never traveled outside of North America so it would be a new and fun experience no matter what!
What is your favorite book? I think I have read Gone Girl about 5 times… so probably that one. But also, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold makes me cry every time I reread it and that is a good testament to a good book in my opinion!
What fills your time outside of work? Spending time with friends and doing my latch hook projects! I’m currently making a doormat/doorway shag rug.
Who is your hero? Why? My mother! She is the strongest, most compassionate, supportive and loving person I have ever had the pleasure to have in my life. She has taught me so much in life and has shaped me to be the person I am today.
