After years of uncertainty and hardship, Army veteran Ellis Martin finally has a place to call home. Once living on the streets of Detroit, Ellis was connected to Volunteers of America Michigan, where he worked closely with his case manager, Jeff Houpt, to find stability and rebuild his life.
Through the support and resources provided by VOA Michigan’s veterans housing programs, Ellis secured his own apartment and began to focus on his health, independence, and future. Grateful for the chance to start over, he says he’s always mindful of how quickly circumstances can change—but he’s determined never to go back to where he once was.
Ellis’s story shines a light on the challenges many veterans face when transitioning out of homelessness and the life-changing impact that compassion and community support can have.
