130 Years: Who We Are

A Legacy Built Together

For 130 years, Volunteers of America Michigan has stood with our communities through every major challenge. From the 1918 Flu Pandemic, the Great Depression, and the 2008 financial crisis to the recent Coronavirus pandemic, we have remained a trusted source of help and hope. Since World War I, we have supported our nation’s heroes and the many neighbors who rely on us. Through these moments, our work has helped communities stay strong and recover with dignity.

What began with Ballington and Maud Booth’s vision has grown into a statewide organization dedicated to compassionate service. Today, that vision continues through programs that offer stability, opportunity, and the tools people need to rebuild their lives across Michigan.

“Our work is not all bread and shelter. The underprivileged, the weak, and the unfortunate need more. They need sympathy, the warmth of fellowship, and the instilling of courage.”

– Ballington Booth, Co-Found of Volunteers of America

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Volunteers of America Michigan provides:

Veteran Support Network

A network of resources for veterans across 18 counties, including housing, employment, mental health support, and help navigating VA and community care. Ensuring those who served receive the support they earned while fostering the resilience to thrive beyond challenges.

Affordable Housing

VOAMI provides over 1,200 affordable housing units across Michigan. Each home is more than shelter… it’s a foundation that allows families and seniors to rebuild their lives, find stability, and look forward to the future.

Community Events

Through programs like Adopt a Family® and Operation Backpack®, your support reached 15,000 children last year, providing gifts and school supplies to ensure they start the year with confidence. VOAMI also delivered over 100,000 meals to people facing hunger and organized thousands of community outreach events to keep neighbors connected and supported.

Thrift Shops

Each purchase at VOAMI’s six thrift stores directly funds programs across Michigan. Last year, thrift stores saved over 20,000,000 lbs. from landfills while helping families, seniors, and veterans access critical services. Every donation and sale turns into real impact.

Future Projects

Exciting initiatives are on the horizon, including expanded healthcare services, Health2Home, and more community-focused programs. These projects are designed to strengthen Michigan communities and provide lasting resources for those working to overcome difficult circumstances.

For 130 years, donors, partners, volunteers, and supporters like YOU have made this work possible.

Your support strengthens communities, transforms lives, and honors the people who need us most.
