The Veterans Housing Program - Detroit

Located at 253 East Milwaukee, Detroit, MI  48322, the Detroit Veterans Housing Program offers a  24-month transitional housing program that addresses the specific needs of 60 homeless vets, providing :

ü      Transitional housing for up to 24 months

ü      Case management and counseling

ü      Employment training and placement


The Detroit Veterans Housing Program's Ground Breaking Ceremony was held on May 12, 2011, and is celebrating it's Grand Opening on November 11, 2011 - Veterans Day!


Thomas Strange, a Veteran Client of Volunteers of America Michigan joins Reza Aghamirzadeh, Community Development Director at Huntington Bank, Ralph Marcus, the Volunteers of America Michigan Board Chair, Saul Green, Deputy Mayor of the City of Detroit, Alex Brodrick, Volunteers of America Michigan President/CEO, Major General Robert W. Smith III, Volunteers of America Michigan Board Member, and Sheila Williams, Coordinator for Homeless Programs at US Department of Veteran Affairs, in conducting the groundbreaking for the new  veteran facility.

With nearly one-in-three homeless men an armed services veteran,  Volunteers of America Michigan is committed to serving the diverse needs of this important group of people.  Both male and female veterans are at higher risk for homelessness.  Our Veterans Programs address the needs of these groups and provide a framework and support for vets to return to employment and permanent housing. 

Volunteers of America Michigan currently has several programs for homeless veterans across the state that provided 15,330 nights of housing for homeless veterans last year alone. 

The Lansing and Niles Veterans Housing Programs
Three programs serving up to 74 vets at a time. 

ü      Two transitional housing programs in Lansing; “Veterans In Progress” serves 16 vets up to 6 months and “Veterans Housing Program” serves 40 vets for up to 24 months. 

ü      One transitional housing program located in beautiful Niles, MI provides housing for 18 vets for up to 6 months

ü      Case management and counseling

ü      Employment training and placement

ü      Track record of 83% of resident participants return to independent permanent housing by the end of the program

Comprehensive employment and training programs with supportive services designed to address employment barriers.  Located in Lansing, Niles, Flint and Detroit.
