A Project for Female Veterans
A Mile in Her Boots
Attention, Female Veterans: Volunteers of America Michigan is inviting you to decorate a pair of combat boots. The collection of decorated combat boots will serve as a mobile art display, bringing awareness to the service of our Female Veterans, leading up to our second Stand Down for Female Veterans this fall.
“My military service has played a big role in defining who I am," said VOAMI Employment Manager Heather Nystrom. "When decorating my boots, it did not take long to decide what parts of my service I wanted to express. There were periods of my service more defining than others, though all memorable: Meeting my husband, running my first marathon, and my time in South Korea all were defining moments."
Decorating combat boots is an artistic way for female veterans to express their experience serving in the military. Read on to see how Nystrom approached the project, and then see how you can participate:
