A Season of Hope
A Season of Hope
“Today the anticipation of knowing is here
You can tell by the smiles
From their innocent faces
The aroma of dinner being prepared fills the air
I am calm.
I let them choose one gift from under the tree,
To open before they lay down to go to sleep
It’s Christmas Eve,
And for the first time
In a long time
They have something
Including food to eat
I am humble
The worry is gone,
And I am thankful
And as I turn all the lights off for the night
And turn on the Christmas tree lights,
My heart fills with joy,
My eyes with tears,
I once more give a silent prayer
To those at Volunteers Of America Michigan
They gave me hope.” - Volanda Harrison
Volanda and her family were affected by the downfall of the economy. After both she and her husband lost their jobs, they struggled to pay bills, and knew Christmas would not be possible without assistance. Volanda turned to Volunteers of America Michigan, and her family was “adopted” through the Adopt A Family Program. Volanda and her children received new winter clothing, educational toys, a holiday dinner to enjoy, and much more. She and her children were filled with hope and gratitude by the experience, as she expresses in her poem.
You can make a difference for a family in need this coming holiday season. There are over 9,000 families waiting to be “adopted”. You can be a sponsor for a family in need in your community—one family at a time, we can make Michigan a happier place for thousands of children and parents who are struggling to make ends meet.
