Volunteers of America Michigan has completed construction and opened a new 10-unit apartment building in Detroit. Oak Village Independence House of Detroit now provides one-bedroom apartments to low-income physically disabled persons in Detroit who would otherwise have very few choices for safe, quality, affordable housing.

As part of the program, residents who are low income and physically disabled, will be required to pay no more than 30 percent of their adjusted income on rent. This building is on one level and has full accessibility features. Each apartment has one bedroom and most utilities are included in the rent.

“We are so pleased to be developing quality, affordable housing for low income physically disabled persons in Detroit, especially considering the economic climate that we are faced with currently. Building this community has had significant positive economic impact on the metro Detroit area – and is truly a jewel in one of Detroit’s oldest neighborhoods”, said Alex Brodrick, President and CEO of Volunteers of America Michigan. “Not only does this project provide crucial affordable housing for physically disabled persons in this area, but it also strengthens the local community by allowing long-time residents to continue to live in a quality, comfortable environment that meets their needs.”

Individuals with a physical disability can contact the Volunteers of America Michigan Housing Department to find out if they qualify for residency.  Residents live independently in their own 1 bedroom apartment and pay just 30% of their adjusted income for rent.  Call 313-934-0010 for more information.
