Employment Services for Homeless Female Veterans
Volunteers of America Michigan is pleased to announce a grant award from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP). The Homeless Female Veterans and Homeless Veterans with Families Grant is designed to address employment barriers faced by female veterans by establishing a coordinated case management system. Transportation, child care, and other employment related assistance is available through the program.
Volunteers of America Michigan established its services for homeless veterans in 2000. The HVRP Program for male veterans was originally added in 2009. This Program successfully placed 115 homeless male veterans into employment since the program began. In January, 2011, the U.S. Department of Labor reports unemployment at 15.5 percent for male veterans and 13.5 percent for female veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan era.
According to Patrick Patterson, Vice President of Operations at Volunteers of America, “We are really blessed for the support that we have received to be able to add these services for female veterans. Recent data shows that females are twice as likely to become homeless as women who never served in the military. This Females and Families Program adds a critical piece that was missing from our services.”
