Volunteers of America Michigan will host the 7th Annual Capital Area Stand Down for Homeless Veterans on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the Michigan Veterans’ Memorial Park and Vietnam Monument in downtown Lansing.
Stand Downs originated in times of war when soldiers were given the opportunity to rest from combat. Stand Downs have become common as a means to care and advocate for homeless veterans. They provide basic needs and introduce available long-term assistance. As Michigan’s Capital City the Stand Down presents an effective opportunity to advocate for homeless veterans with Michigan legislators.
Services to be provided at the Stand Down include employment assistance, legal advice, veterans services, hair cuts, health screenings, social security advice, vision testing, and more.
117 homeless veterans and 75 homeless people received services from over 40 agencies at the 2009 Stand Down. One veteran described the event “As a blessing, to bring all of these people and agencies together to help veterans in need is truly amazing. Thank you for remembering us.”
