Mr. Higgins* didn’t expect to be inspired by the local news. But tonight was different and it was about to change one family’s world. Mingled in with the stories of politics and crime, Detroit’s Fox 2 newscaster Andrea Isom began to tell the story of one family’s struggle. With one sister on drugs and the other tragically murdered, Laverne had adopted her 4 nieces and nephews and was caring for them in addition to her own 6 children. The family was
struggling financially but they were happy with what little they had. Mr. Higgins was mesmerized. He admired the strength of a woman who had so little and decided then and there that he wanted to do something special.
When Mr. Higgins’ daughter heard the phone ring the next day, she had no idea that her father, who lived alone, had been making plans –and acting on them. She had no idea that he had already bought a full‐size freezer and half‐filled it with frozen foods. She had no idea that he wanted to give it all to someone who had so little. But when he told her his plan and asked for her help, she couldn’t say no.
Saturday morning, LaVerne was watching out the front window. She had received a call from the Adopt A Family office saying that someone was on their way out to her house to bring a gift for her family. Weeks earlier, when the TV crew had come, the butterflies in her stomach were out of anxiety – now they were flitting in excitement.
When Mr. Higgins pulled his truck up to LaVerne’s modest home and unloaded a freezer full of frozen meats and vegetables, pizzas and side dishes – the butterflies in her stomach erupted into tears of joy. She couldn’t believe that someone would do something so incredible for her children. This gift would feed her family for months.
Mr. Higgins didn’t want any recognition, he didn’t even want LaVerne to know it was all coming from him. He just wanted to make sure that those sweet children had plenty to eat. And now they do. And now they know that just one person can change the lives of an entire family.
