Volunteers of America Michigan hosted it’s Annual Capital Area Stand Down for Homeless Veterans on May 21st at the Michigan Veterans’ Memorial Park and Vietnam Monument in downtown Lansing. 94 homeless veterans and 60 homeless people received services from over 40 agencies from around the state. Services included: employment assistance, veterans benefits, haircuts, legal advice, health care, vision screenings and more.
The event began with a fly over and presentation of colors from the Michigan National Guard, followed by a short ceremony. Speakers included General Thomas Cutler, Joan Jackson Johnson, Ph.D., Andy Levine, and Representative Joan Bauer. Participants received a hot lunch off the grill and “ditty” bags full of personal care items, clothing, and other practical items needed by the homeless.
Stand Downs originated in times of war when soldiers were given the opportunity to rest from combat. Stand Downs have become common as a means to care and advocate for homeless veterans. They provide basic needs and introduce available long-term assistance. As Michigan’s Capital City the Stand Down presents an effective opportunity to advocate for homeless veterans with Michigan legislators.
One veteran that received services described the event “As a blessing, to bring all of these people and agencies together to help veterans in need is truly amazing. Thank you for remembering us.”
A special thanks to all of the sponsors, agencies and volunteers that made this event possible!
Stand Down 2009 has been scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2009. More details coming soon.
